The Waconda Lake Assocation FISH-A-THON
takes place each year, May 1 thru Labor Day Monday.

Glen Elder State Park Biologist, Scott Waters, and his crew tagged 390 fish this early spring with bright YELLOW tags, in preparation for the 2014 event -- yellow being this year’s contest identification color. (A different color is used every year.) Each year, as many species of fish as can be netted are tagged.  The tags have numbers and the year on them.

Also in preparation, Lake Association members contact businesses and individuals to see if they would like to participate as sponsors.  Those that get involved then pledge either cash, merchandise or a gift certificate for as many fish they want to sponsor.  They also get name those fish(es).  Once the sponsors list is compiled each is assigned the number(s) from the tagged fish.

Minimum sponsorship amount is $25.

“Pay outs” on sponsored fish occur ONLY if a 2014 yellow tagged fish is caught and properly turned in… otherwise sponsors get free advertisement for their involvement for the season.

The Waconda Lake Association pledges 2 fish each year whose names are: Waconda Willie and Glen Elder Girl.  This year they are each worth $400!  And, if nether is caught, the amount increases $100 for the next year.  This year rhere are also few other “large dollar” fish… including one $600 fish, two $500 fish and one other $400 fish.

To participate, BEFORE FISHING… a fisherman must purchase a $10 entry ticket.
The ticket also includes the buyer’s immediate family members.

Tickets can be purchased at the following area businesses:
  • Glen Elder Marina – at the state park
  • Glen Elder State Park Office – KS 128 just south of Hwy 24
  • Lakeside Convenience – Hwy 24, just north of the park’s east entrance
  • Lakeside Lodge – 817 Oak St., Cawker City, just south off Hwy 24,
  • Wayne’s Sporting Goods– downtown Glen Elder, west side of park square

Fish can be checked in at any of these 3 area businesses:
  • Glen Elder Marina – at the state park
  • Lakeside Convenience – Hwy 24, just north of the park’s east entrance
  • Wayne’s Sporting Goods – downtown Glen Elder, west side of park square

When checking the fish, it must be in lively, freshly caught condition with the proper 2014 tag still intact.  The tag will be removed at the check-in location and lucky participant will be given a certificate which can then be taken to the fish’s sponsor to collect their prize.

Full page advertisements are posted throughout the area and outlying businesses to promote this event.  Winners will be listed and updated on our website every couple of weeks during the event.

Each year the total amount of pledges vary; this year’s 2014 are valued at nearly $15,000.
